Nestled in the lush mountains above Uvita, Refugio Madreselva is a vibrant sanctuary for tropical birdlife. Our 24-acre private rainforest refuge offers a peaceful habitat for both resident and migratory species. Fiery-billed Aracari

A small, colorful toucan found only on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica and western Panama. Look for its fiery orange bill as family groups move noisily through the canopy.

Golden-naped Woodpecker

A regional specialty with a bright golden nape and a bold white stripe down its black back. Pairs are often heard drumming and calling from tall dead trees.

Green Honeycreeper

Females are a vivid leaf green, while males glow iridescent blue-green with a black head; both have a bright yellow bill. Watch for them feeding on fruit and nectar with mixed flocks of tanagers.

Eye-ringed Flatbill

A quiet flycatcher of the shady understory, easily recognized by its bold white eye-ring and broad, flat bill. It often sits motionless before sallying out for insects.

White-crested Coquette

One of the smallest and most sought-after hummingbirds in the region, found only in southern Costa Rica and western Panama. The male sports a striking white crest.

White-whiskered Puffbird

Named for the white “whiskers” around its bill, this puffbird perches patiently in the forest understory, waiting to snatch large insects and small lizards.
